Exercise = Routine + Know-how+ Exertion

 

[I would have said that Exercise = routine + know how + exertion. That keeps the most important element (getting a regular workout schedule) in the most important part of the formula. -- Scott Adams]

Exercise = core-building activity + aerobic activity + stretching

 

Before you click on the links above, here are some ideas for getting yourself to exercise in the first place if you find it difficult:

 

  • Set a timer each day for 15 to 30 minutes (or 10, if 15 seems like too much), and spend that time moving around. Dance, do jumping jacks, lift weights, go for a walk, climb up and down your stairs, or do any combination of those or anything else that will get you moving. Sure, maybe it won't burn as many calories as you'd like or get your heart going as well as it might like, but it's a start, and you can build on the habit you're creating. You can build up your time as you go along, and build up intensity as you feel like it.

 

  • Find something active that you love and can get excited about. Try out martial arts, or swimming, or hiking. Get a dog and take it for walks. Go to a batting cage. Go roller skating.

 

  • Remember that everyone starts somewhere. It's a little easier to think of yourself as existing on a fit-level continuum rather than thinking of yourself as just not athletic or active. If you go to the gym and pay attention, you'll see that even the most fit looking people are still breathing hard and sweating; it's just that it might take a little less to get you into that same state.

 

  • Avoid sports that are dangerous or cause wear and tear, as they may have an impact on your longterm happiness. Some examples: tai chi or swimming are ok, base jumping and karate are more likely to leave you with permanent damage. For these reasons it's usually wise to avoid competitions. Unless you don't mind a little wear and tear. Then just do what makes you happy and gets you off your butt.
